Widely regarded as one of the top defensive coaches in Lacrosse, Ryan Wellner is in his seventh-year coaching at the United States Naval Academy and second serving as the Associate Head Coach. Wellner joined the Navy staff in the summer of 2011 after a three-year stint at Stony Brook where he primarily worked with the defense and the Seawolves’ faceoff game. His defensive units at Navy have produced seven All-American defensemen and ranked among the countries best at #13 in 2015. In addition, Brady Dove anchored a faceoff squad that won 65 percent of its draws to rank 8th in the nation.
Prior to his arrival at Stony Brook in 2009, Wellner spent the 2008 campaign as the men’s assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Washington & Lee University in Virginia, helping lead the Generals to a 9-6 record. He also served as the defensive coordinator for three seasons at the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey where he helped guide the Ducks to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. Wellner’s defensive units produced a pair of All-America defensemen and ranked among the Div. III top 10 in scoring defense.
A 2000 graduate of Mary Washington College with a bachelor of science in business management, Wellner also served as an assistant coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (2004) and Chaminade High School (2003). Additionally, he is currently the Director of the New York Lacrosse Academy and served as the Director of Operations for the National Lacrosse League from 2001-2003.
A four-year letter winner at Mary Washington, he served as captain of the lacrosse team his senior year and earned the school’s Outstanding Senior Award in 2000. Wellner, and his wife, Kate, are the parents of sons, Griffin and MacGregor, and daughter, Ashley.
Director and Owner of Dominion Liberty Lacrosse Club, Erin was a standout player and two season Captain at Johns Hopkins University from 1998 - 2002. Voted the Best Offensive Player in 2001 and selected for the 2002 North/South Senior All-Star game, Erin is among the Blue Jay leaders in career assists, goals, and points.
In addition to her playing experience, she was the Associate Head/Assistant Women’s Lacrosse Coach at Georgetown University from 2004 - 2012. During her nine seasons with Georgetown, they were named the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year for two-consecutive years. Erin coached eight offensive All-Americans, including Alison Chambers, Coco Stanwick and most recently Ashby Kaestner and Molly Ford. Under her watch, the Hoyas averaged almost 11 goals per game.
Prior to coaching at Georgetown, Erin spent two seasons at Stevens Institute of Technology helping to coach the team to the ECAC tournament both years, winning both the 2003 and 2004 Knickerbocker Conference Championship. The 2004 season record was the best in Stevens’ history.
Aside from coaching, Hellmold is the co-owner of the New York Lacrosse Academy, a camp company that has been teaching the game to young athletes for over 20 years.
Hellmold currently resides in Alexandria, Va., with her husband Erich, a D.C. attorney and a 2002 graduate of Johns Hopkins where he played football for the Blue Jays. The couple have four children, Grant(7), Taylor(5), Pierce(3) and Grady(1).
